BEGUILING FACTS OF ODISSI DANCE FORM

 

 

Dancing is not only a sports, it is one’s passion, dedication, hard work and love. Being privileged enough to be Indians, we have a lot of scope to learn various kind of dance forms. Be it western or classical, India is hailing in all platforms. There are eight kind of classical dance forms out of which Odissi is one. We all know many things related to odissi dance form but I want to focus light on those topics which is not so known to the people.

 

 

 

 

 

 

1- Odissi dance is also known as Orissi in ancient and older literature. Panchama Veda is                      also is one of it’s popular name.

 

2- This type of dance form was originated in Hindu temples of Orissa, India.

 

3- It is considered to be the oldest classical dance form of India.

 

 

 

 

4- In history it is mentioned that the dance was performed to expresses religious stories, incidents and spiritual ideas of Hindu Gods and Goddesses specially of Lord Jagannath, Shiva and Surya.

 

 

 

 

 

5- According to history, this dance form was mainly performed by the women.

 

6- Odissi depictions are found in the form of inscriptions and sculptures in temples like Sun temple and Brahmeswara. Also found in the Ranigumpha caves at Udaygiri.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

7- Tribhanga is the most important and unique feature of Odissi. Which means three parts break in literature. It is the independent movement of head, chest and pelvis .

 

 

 

 

 

8- Abinaya, the body movements are used in Odissi to show and express different posture and attitudes.

 

 

 

9- Mudra is also an important element of Odissi dance. The term Mudra is refers hand position which denotes different types of emotion.

 

 

 

10- Odissi is considered a dance of love, joy and delight with deep and intense passion that is true and fresh, divine and human. Thus the style is soft and lyrical with patches of high pleasure.

 

 

11- Over a period of time, three schools of Odissi dance has developed. They are Mahari, Nartaki and Gotipau.

 

 

12- The Mahari system came from the Devadasi tradition, the royal courts dance was known as  the Nartaki tradition and in the Gotipau tradition of Odissi dance, young boys dress up in female attires and enacted female roles.

 

 

Some famous Odissi dancers are Hare Krishna Behera , Aditi Bandyopadhyay, Anita Babu , Arpita Venkatesh, Surendranath Jena, Chitra Krishnamurti, Dona Ganguly who is the wife of famous former captain of Indian cricket team, Sourav Ganguly.
