The key nexus for and against KAM are as follows, • From the suppliers’ perspective, strategic customers have become more difficult to acquire and retain as markets mature and as such customers demand ever better service at ever lower prices. • But at the same time the proportion of business coming from key accounts is increasing, but the increased power of these customers makes it more difficult for suppliers to capture value from the relationship. The benefits to the customer of being treated as a strategic account are clear; however, powerful customers may completely eat away the benefits to their supplier too by entering into such relationships. Thus relationships with very large customers may be unprofitable for suppliers. Therefore, suppliers need to understand how to capture value from their key customers. With these observations we have come up with five premises,

Key Account Management: Adding Elements of Account Fit to an integrative Theoretical Framework Two important environmental shifts have taken place in marketing in the recent years. First is the migration from short-term, transactional exchanges to long-term, relational exchanges. Second, marketers are increasingly moving away from the assumption that customer demand is homogenous and are accepting that customers are heterogeneous. Key Account management is at the intersection of these two shifts in the marketing landscape. The goal of this study is to develop such an integrative model of Key account relationship effectiveness and to qualitatively explore the antecedents of relationship effectiveness. First, relationship effectiveness is re-examined and second, account fit is introduced to the list of previously studied antecedents of relationship effectiveness. The study makes three important contributions : First, an integrative model is proposed as a unifying framework to study KAs at account level. Second, three type of account fit are introduced as important antecedents to and moderators of relationship effectiveness, namely strategic, operational and personal. Third, the key mediating variable, relationship effectiveness is reconceptualised.
