Problems met in stability calculations

For the calculation of the hydrostatic stability of mobile offshore units, various authorities have nowadays adopted almost the same requirements. These requirements lean heavily on the application of wind overturning moment, equilibrium angles, downflooding and range of stability.  A discussion of the various ways to calculate the righting arms is given together with problems met in practice like backward sloping curves and heel angles for which the rig is unstable in trim or axis direction.  The use of the gain in potential energy is investigated as a means to arrive at realistic righting arm curves. Though this suggests that free twist (or varying axis direction) is the preferred method, it is not without problems of its own. At this moment there does not seem to be a robust way to calculate stability other than using fixed trim (read: zero trim) and a fixed axis direction. It is proposed to do (more) research into the actual reasons for a MODU to capsize due to environmental loading, preferably by model testing with wind and waves.  In the formal education of naval architecture more attention should be paid to the stability calculation of offshore rigs. It is essential that the students have a good understanding of the underlying principles. Also, it is important that results of computer programs should not be accepted without a good insight in the calculation method and in the validity of the results. In order to offer this insight, programs should output information like trim angle, axis direction (if variable), VCB value, stability of the position and identify possible discontinuities in the curve. It is the authors’ opinion that many programs fail in this respect.  Though in the 1980’s studies have been done into the possible capsize and downflooding of a semi submersible, there still is a need to improve actual knowledge of the capsize mechanism in a real world environment. This is especially true when considering stability of jack-ups.

Mercedes-Benz at Auto Expo 2018

The Auto Expo is around the corner and all the leading car makers are ready to showcase their models and concepts. Mercedes-Benz is not going to be left behind in this race and has decided not to withhold from showcasing its technical prowess. This is going to be like a sneak peek into the future where you can expect a lot more developments but this can provide you some pathway to build your imagination. The company has already expressed its viewpoint of electric cars being the future and there can't be a better way than to showcase the EQ concept in the Auto Expo 2018. The company has committed to introduce 10 electric cars by 2022. These models will include SUVs, sedans and hatchbacks. The vehicle architecture will be similar to latest models and will have an intelligent multi-material mix of steel, aluminium and carbon fibre. This will help in achieving lightweight design, strength and  cost efficiency. The Mercedes-Benz EQ Concept is no mean option with the company claiming a power output of 400hp and a driving range of up to 500km on a single charge. There is a lithium ion battery pack which is mounted between the axles. Despite its size the company says it can do 0-100 km/h in under 5 seconds. Aesthetics are one of the key features and it looks suave and a part of Mercedes family with sharper lines. The main distinguishing feature in terms of design would be the black panel front grille that comes with a white-illuminated Mercedes star and integrates all the elements under one surface.

Datsun Redi GO AMT launched

The highly awaited Datsun Redi GO AMT has been launched in India. Coming in the market priced at Rs 3.8 lakh, it is in direct competition to Renault Kwid and Maruti Suzuki K10. There is going to be competition between these in terms of features on offer. The features that set it apart are the smart tall boy roofline and outside the box design. It offers Bluetooth audio streaming with hands-free calling, which is offered on the T (O) and S variants. The cabin gets all-black interiors along with central locking system with remote key. The car also features a best-in-class ground clearance of 185 mm. The Redi GO is available in five colour options - Ruby Red, Lime Green, White, Grey and Silver. Commenting on the launch, Nissan Motor India Managing Director Jerome Saigot said, "Datsun Redi GO Smart Drive Auto combines the convenience and flexibility of dual-driving mode with best-in-class ground clearance, cabin space, boot space and head room". The Redi GO smart drive shares its motor with standard 1.0 litre Redi GO. The car is powered by a 1 liter-3 cylinder petrol engine that puts out 67 Bhp of peak power and 91 Nm of peak torque. The gearbox is a five speed automated manual transmission (AMT). This also means that the manual gearbox is retained but with the gear shifting getting automated through an electromechanical device. This gives the Redi GO AMT its automatic appeal. The Redi GO comes with a 5 speed AMT which it shares with the Renault Kwid. But the contrasting feature here is that unlike the Kwid, the Redi GO gets a conventional shift stick in place of the dashboard mounted motor on the Kwid 1 litre. This makes it a lot easier to use. It has got a manual drive option as well. It has missed out on 'Park' mode on the gearbox like the Nano, K 10 and Kwid. There is a 'Creep' mode that allows the car to keep moving in even bumper to bumper traffic when we lift off the brake pedal. The car is meant for city buyers who want the convenience of an automatic but with the fuel efficiency of a manual. While Datsun hasn’t released the ARAI certified mileage figure for the Redi GO AMT, it’s expected to be similar to that of the manual variant, at 22.5 Kmpl. Since AMTs are cheaper than torque converter automatics, it has allowed Datsun to price the car very competitively.

Tata Motors to showcase 6 electric vehicles

The Auto Expo is around the corner and we will be soon witnessing a lot of exciting additions. Auto major Tata Motors will showcase an extended range of six electric vehicles, in personal and mass mobility segments in the upcoming Auto Expo. The company has already announced that it will present 26 smart mobility solutions across its passenger and commercial vehicles at the expo to be held from February 9-14. These six electric vehicles will be among those exhibits.   Past Events : India unveiled "National Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2020" in 2013 to address the issue of National Energy Security, Vehicular Pollution and Growth of Domestic Manufacturing Capabilities. Government of India has plans to make a major change in this segment by 2030 as supported in its commitment to Paris Agreement. Current Status : As of now the Indian Market is having Mahindra e20plus, Mahindra e-verito and Tata Tigor Electric as the fully electric cars. There are Hybrid cars available in the market like Toyota Prius, Toyota Camry Hybrid, Mahindra Scorpio Hybrid and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz to name a few.   Tata at Auto Expo 2018 : Connecting the targets set by the Indian Government with the company objectives, Tata has planned to launch their electric vehicles at this year's Auto Expo 2018. This year, the company's focus of the Auto Expo will be journey towards the future of integrated mobility solutions, outlining plans for the future of India's Smart Cities and its connected generation.  "While we cannot comment on specifics, we can confirm that Tata Motors will indeed showcase an extended range of six electric vehicles, enabling personal and mass mobility, further reiterating our commitment to the government's vision for electrification by 2030," a Tata Motors Spokesperson said. EESL will supply 350 electric cars to Tata Motors, while rival Mahindra & Mahindra will supply 150 electric cars. The company has rolled out the first batch of electric version of its compact sedan Tigor from Sanand plant to be supplied to Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL). Commenting on the company's EV roadmap, Tata Motors CEO and Managing Director Guenter Butschek said, "Working collaboratively with the government to facilitate faster adoption of EVs, we at Tata Motors, are completely ready to drive the EV revolution and build a sustainable future for India".   Electric Models : The Tigor Electric compact sedan that Tata supplies to EESL features a 40 Bhp electric motor that can propel the car to a distance of about 120-150 kilometers per charge. The battery of the car can be recharged to 80 % capacity in just 90 minutes through the use of a fast charger. It remains to be seen if the Tiago Electric will feature similar specifications. Moreover, it is not known if Tata Motors will see the Tigor and Tiago Electric cars to private buyers in the same specification that it uses for government supply. In terms of pricing, the Tigor and Tiago Electric have a chance of success in the Indian market only if priced well under Rs. 10 lakhs. Otherwise, it does not make sense to buy electric cars despite their lower running costs as petrol and diesel versions of the Tiago and Tigor start from well under Rs. 5 lakhs. The only other electric cars sold in India to private buyers are the Mahindra E2O four door hatchback and eVerito sedan. Both cars are very poor sellers mainly because of their high purchase prices.   Non Electric Models To Electric Models : Tata Nexon will be coming in the SUV category. It will range from Rs 6.36 lakh to Rs 10.61 lakh. Tata Bolt will be launched in the Hatchback segment. Providing a mileage of 18-23 kmpl it is one of the most looked forward to cars. It will be priced between to Rs 5.12 lakh to Rs 8.14 lakh. Tata Hexa will be launched in the Crossover in the price range of Rs 14 lakh to Rs 21 lakh. Thus we can expect a good display of vehicles with lots of attractive features coming up in the Auto Expo 2018. Tata will be coming up with the new models and will align its company objectives to the Indian Mission of Electric Cars by 2030. The Auto Expo 2018 is sure to turn a few eyeballs.

2018 HONDA CBR250R TO BE LAUNCHED SOON

The big news out of Auto Expo 2018 is that the Honda CBR250R will be making a comeback in a BS IV compliant avatar this year. The new 2018 Honda CBR250R was showcased at the ongoing Auto Expo 2018. It will have a few subtle upgrades, new colour options and decals as well as a full-LED headlamp. The update brings a freshness to the motorcycle, adding a new element to its styling. When BS IV emission norms came into effect in mid 2017 the Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) had taken the CBR250R off the Indian market. At that time, there were rumours of either the Honda CBR250RR or the larger CBR300R being the replacement for the 250R. However, Honda later confirmed that neither of those would make it to India. The new 2018 CBR250R will be an all-LED headlamp setup to bring it up to the level with competitors. This motorcycle also receives new graphics which highlight its shape better. There will be two new colour options in the form of green and orange, apart from the existing colours. Honda India has plans to improve on their market share and the launch of this model is expected to contribute to the targets set by company. In terms of the power train, the 2018 Honda CBR250R continues using the same 249 cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine tuned to produce 26 bhp at 8500 rpm and 22.9 Nm of peak torque at 7000 rpm. The motor comes paired to a 6-speed gearbox. The CBR250R uses telescopic forks up front and a monoshock setup at the rear, while braking performance continues to come from discs at either end. Thus we all are awaiting eagerly for the launch and since with advances in its style and excess power it will certainly be a power packed model to rule its market segment.

Visionary behind Movies

Three years ago, Martin Scorsese, the New York director who has made street violence one of his signature traits, teamed up with Harvey Weinstein, co-chairman of Miramax Films and something of a street fighter himself. The goal was to make a stylized epic film about gang warfare in pre-Civil War Manhattan with enough mass appeal to score at the box office.  But the making of that movie, Gangs of New York, has turned into an epic of its own. Stars like Robert DeNiro and Willem Dafoe have come and gone. Costs have overshot the original budget by about 25 per cent to soar above $100 million. Weinstein has fought for a streamlined, more commercial version. All the while, Scorsese has tried to stick to his artistic guns as the two have battled over taste and length.  With hopes of promoting the film next month at Cannes, Miramax executives are pushing to have the final editing completed in the next few weeks so the complex task of mixing sound with film can begin. But Scorsese is still not satisfied with the ending. He has been considering reshooting it, some people involved in the film say. The film was initially supposed to hit theatres last December, but now is expected to be released later this year.  Scorsese has not had a box-office smash since Cape Fear, which earned $79 million domestically in 1991. Weinstein, a domineering personality who, by his own admission, is spurned in Hollywood despite championing eclectic hits like The English Patient and Goodwill Hunting, has come under financial pressure of his own. In January he shut Talk magazine and more recently he shed 75 Miramax employees and contract workers to trim costs.  Conflicts arise any time a director's vision collides with pressures to make a commercial hit. But Saul Zantez, the producer who battled with Weinstein over money after working with him on the Academy Award - winning The English Patient, said it was especially true with such strong-willed personalities.  ''Marty is only interested in making the right picture,'' Mr. Zaentz said. ''He will make it no matter what he has to do. And he is strong enough to fight for what he believes in. Harvey's interest, on the other hand, is not the same as Marty's. It is about making money.'' The budget for ''Gangs'' has ballooned to more than $103 million from the original $83 million - some of which is being paid for by Mr. Scorsese and Mr. DiCaprio, who plays the lead character, according to two people involved in the film. At that price - high even by today's standards - it would be the most expensive movie in Miramax's 22-year history. Mr. Weinstein and Mr. Scorsese declined to be interviewed but released this statement: ''As the only two decision makers on 'Gangs of New York' we would be happy to discuss this film in the context of an art versus commerce article when the story is an informed one, which clearly hinges on the final film being screened.''
